Siena lies in the hills of central Tuscany, and its plan follows the land. The city is built on three ridges that meet in a Y shape. The main streets run along their crests, and the valleys between them drop steeply, with gardens and orchards sometimes still inside the walls. At the meeting point sits the Piazza del Campo, a fan-shaped square sloping down towards the Palazzo Pubblico.
The historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most complete medieval cities in Europe. The Torre del Mangia rises above the Campo, and the cathedral stands on its own high point to the west. Twice each summer, on 2 July and 16 August, the Palio horse race is run around the square. The city is divided into seventeen contrade, historic neighbourhoods with their own identity.

Siena's main streets follow three hill crests that meet near the Campo. They give the city its distinctive Y-shaped structure.
