Sifra lies in the Afar Region of northeastern Ethiopia, where the highland escarpment gives way to the low, hot plains of the Rift. The town itself is compact. A map shows a modest set of streets surrounded by a great deal of open land, crossed by tracks and by watercourses that fill only after rain.
Afar is one of the driest and hottest parts of the Horn of Africa. Much of its population has traditionally lived by herding camels, goats and cattle across these plains. Towns like Sifra act as local centres for trade, administration and services within that much wider pastoral landscape.
