Świętochłowice covers very little ground, yet it is one of the most densely built towns in Poland. On a map it shows almost no empty space: rows of streets, tenement blocks and rail lines run right up to the borders with Chorzów, Ruda Śląska, Bytom and Katowice. It is hard to tell where one town ends and the next begins, which is typical of the Upper Silesian conurbation.
The town grew out of several separate settlements, among them Lipiny, Chropaczów, Zgoda and Piaśniki. Each still has its own small cluster of streets. Cross-city expressway
