Taikoo Shing lies on the northeastern shore of Hong Kong Island, between Quarry Bay and Sai Wan Ho. On a map it is a compact block of residential towers, podium gardens and internal roads. The harbourfront expressway runs to the north, and the steep, green slopes of the island rise to the south.
The estate was developed by Swire from the late 1970s on land once occupied by the Taikoo Dockyard and sugar refinery, both important to Hong Kong's early industry. It became one of the city's best-known private housing estates, with Cityplaza shopping centre at its core and direct links to the MTR.
A Taikoo Shing map poster shows the tight, planned geometry of the estate. The tower blocks are arranged in groups, a shopping and transport hub sits at the centre, and the waterfront and hills close it in on both sides.
