Târgoviște lies in southern Romania, where the Carpathian foothills meet the Wallachian plain. On a map, the Ialomița river runs along the eastern side of the city, and the street network spreads westward from it, with the historic centre close to the river and newer districts extending outward.
For more than two centuries, Târgoviște served as the capital of Wallachia. At its centre is the Princely Court, a complex of palace ruins, a church and the tall Chindia Tower. The court is associated with several rulers, most famously Vlad III, known as Vlad the Impaler, who reigned from here in the fifteenth century.
A Târgovişte map poster shows the outline of that old capital within the modern city: the court and its surrounding streets, the main avenues leading away from them, and the river to the east. Roads north lead toward the mountains, while to the south the land opens across the plain toward Bucharest.
