Tataouine is the main town of Tunisia's far south, set in a valley among the dry hills that lead toward the Sahara. From above, the town is a compact grid of streets and low buildings along a dry riverbed, with the lines of the settlement fading quickly into open, bare terrain.
The region is known for its ksour, fortified granaries built by Berber communities, in which vaulted storage cells called ghorfas are stacked around a central courtyard. Several stand on hilltops or ridges within reach of the town, and the roads leading to them branch out across the hills in long, thin lines.
The name has travelled much further than the town itself: George Lucas borrowed it for the desert planet Tatooine, and parts of the Star Wars films were shot in southern Tunisia. A Tataouine map poster shows the real place, a sparse grid set in rough, open country, with the traces of old caravan and farm routes around it.
A wadi runs through the valley, usually dry but clearly visible on the map as a soft, meandering line through the town.
The centre is a small, orderly block of streets that stops abruptly at the edge of open land, with very little sprawl in between.
Thin roads leave the town toward surrounding hills and ridges, where fortified granaries stand above the plains.

Ko e hā ʻa Tataouine
Some people hang Tataouine for its connection to film history, and others because they have walked among the ksour or have family roots in the south. Either way, the map is spare and quiet, much like the landscape it shows.
Personalise the title and subtitle, perhaps with the date of a journey, and keep or change the coordinates line. The five styles are Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Sand is the natural choice for this desert setting.
