Tomohon lies in the Minahasa highlands of North Sulawesi, between the volcanoes Lokon and Mahawu, high enough to be noticeably cooler than nearby Manado. On the map, the city is a long, loosely built corridor that follows a main road, with neighbourhoods branching off onto the slopes on either side.
The volcanoes define the edges of the composition. Their slopes are largely free of streets, so they appear as broad open spaces, while the city fills the saddle between them. Small lakes nearby, including Lake Linow with its changing colours, add quiet shapes among the farmland around the built area.
Across Indonesia, Tomohon is known as a city of flowers, with nurseries and gardens throughout the area and a flower festival held in the city. It is also known for its traditional market. A Tomohon map poster shows the structure beneath all this: a highland city stretched between two volcanic peaks.
Mount Lokon and Mount Mahawu rise on either side of the city. They leave wide open areas on the map and frame the built corridor between them.
The central road runs the length of Tomohon, and much of the city is built along it, giving the map a strong linear spine with branches.
This small volcanic lake near the city, famous for its shifting colours, appears as a compact shape among the surrounding slopes and fields.

Ko e hā ʻa Tomohon
Many people know Tomohon from trips up from Manado, from its flower markets or from growing up in the Minahasa highlands. Stretched between the volcanoes, its map makes a distinctive piece that is clearly not just another city grid.
Personalise the poster with your own title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps the date of a visit or a family name. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, and pick $9 HD files or a printed poster on matte paper.
