Tsukubamirai was created in 2006 when the towns of Ina and Yawara merged. Its name means Tsukuba future and reflects the hopes attached to the new railway that crosses it. On a map, the city is less a single centre than a patchwork of older villages, open farmland and newly planned districts, spread across the flat land of southern Ibaraki.
Rice paddies cover much of the area, and their boundaries form large rectangular grids that are almost as striking as the streets. Rivers wind across the plain. The Tsukuba Express has brought planned residential areas around its stations, and their curving roads and regular blocks stand out clearly from the scattered hamlets nearby.
A Tsukubamirai map poster captures a landscape in transition, where modern suburbs meet farmland worked for generations. In black and white, the tidy lines of the paddies, the curves of the rivers and the new districts build a layered, carefully balanced image that looks quite unlike a conventional city map.
Rectangular field boundaries cover large parts of the city and form a fine geometric pattern that fills the spaces between settlements on the poster.
New neighbourhoods have grown around the stations of the line linking Tokyo and Tsukuba. Their planned streets form distinct clusters on the map.
Rivers cross the city in long, meandering lines bordered by fields and embankments, giving the flat landscape its main natural structure.

For families who moved to one of the new districts along the railway, or who have lived here since the days of Ina and Yawara, a map of Tsukubamirai records both the old and the new sides of home.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for instance with the year you moved in, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. HD files cost $9, and printed posters on matte paper are available with an optional frame.
