Whickham is in the borough of Gateshead, on high ground above the south bank of the River Tyne. The old village centre sits along the ridge, and the streets from later decades spread across the slopes around it. From above, the pattern is mostly curving suburban roads and closes, with clusters of older lanes where the village began.
To the west and south the ground falls toward the valley of the River Derwent, a tributary of the Tyne. Much of that valley is green, with woodland, fields and paths following the course of an old railway line. On a map, the built-up area ends sharply along its edge.

To the west and south, the streets stop at the wooded valley of the Derwent. The contrast between blank green space and dense housing gives the map its shape.
