Woonsocket lies in the northern corner of Rhode Island, on the border with Massachusetts. The Blackstone River loops through the city in a series of tight bends, and the waterfalls on the river powered the textile mills that built it. From above, streets fill the land between the river bends and climb the hills on either side.
A Woonsocket map poster shows this river-shaped layout. Mill buildings and older streets gather along the water near the falls, while neighbourhoods rise steeply up the surrounding slopes in dense, irregular patterns. Bridges cross the river at several points, and the curve of the Blackstone gives the map a strong, looping form.
In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries the city drew many workers from Quebec, and French-Canadian heritage remains part of its identity. The Museum of Work and Culture tells that story in a former mill building. Woonsocket is also home to the headquarters of CVS Health. On paper, the mills, the hills and the river still define the city.
The river loops through the city in pronounced curves, the most striking shape on the map and the reason the mills settled here.
Old industrial buildings and dense streets cluster along the water near the falls, the historic heart of the city's textile economy.
Residential streets climb the slopes on both sides of the river, forming tight, irregular patterns that reflect the steep terrain.
