Żary is in western Poland, in historical Lower Lusatia, not far from the German border. The map shows a clear medieval core. Its streets are packed within an almost round outline, with the market square at the centre, and the more open blocks of the later town spread around it. On the outskirts, the streets give way to forest and farmland on gently rolling ground.
For centuries the town was known by its German name, Sorau, and it was shaped by the noble families who owned it. They left a castle and a palace complex next to the old town. Today Żary is one of the larger towns in the Lubusz region.
