Sitten, known in French as Sion, is the capital of the Swiss canton of Valais. It lies on the floor of the Rhône valley, where the river flows past on the south side of the town and steep mountain slopes rise on either side. From above, the map shows a compact old town pressed against two rocky hills.
The hills, Valère and Tourbillon, are the city's defining landmarks. Valère carries a fortified basilica that houses one of the oldest playable organs in the world, and Tourbillon holds the ruins of a medieval castle.
