Achill Island lies off the coast of County Mayo and is the largest island off the Irish coast. A short bridge across Achill Sound connects it to the Corraun Peninsula and the mainland. Its outline is broad and irregular. Mountains such as Slievemore and Croaghaun rise in the north and west, and long sandy bays open between rocky headlands.
At the western end, the cliffs of Croaghaun are among the highest sea cliffs in Europe, and below them lies Keem Bay, a sheltered cove where the road ends. On the southern slopes of Slievemore stands a deserted village of stone cottages, abandoned in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, whose long rows are still visible.
An Achill Island map poster traces the roads that loop around the island, including the Atlantic Drive in the south, and the villages they connect, such as Keel, Dooagh and Dugort. The mountains leave large areas clear, while lakes, bog and beaches add subtle variation. The result is open and airy, with the coast doing much of the work.

A short crossing links the island to the mainland on its eastern side. On the map it is a tiny line across a narrow channel, easy to overlook but essential.
Keel beach
A long, straight beach runs along the southern shore near Keel, backed by Keel Lough. It forms one of the few smooth lines on an otherwise rugged coast.
