Abha lies high in the Asir mountains of southwestern Saudi Arabia. Instead of the flat grids typical of many Saudi cities, its streets follow valleys and ridges, curving around slopes and gathering in the lower ground. On a map, the city looks fragmented, with neighbourhoods separated by hills and open land.
A dam and its reservoir form an open shape near the city, and roads climb toward the surrounding peaks. Nearby Al Soudah contains the country's highest mountains, and cable cars run down steep escarpments in the region. The terrain gives the map strong, irregular lines that change sharply from one district to the next.
