Te mapa
Acayucan lies in the south of Veracruz, at the northern end of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, the narrowest part of Mexico. Its position between the Gulf coast and the routes heading south and east toward Oaxaca, Tabasco and Chiapas has made it a natural crossroads, and on the map major highways converge on the town from several directions.
The terrain is gently rolling rather than flat, and the street grid adjusts to it. A regular layout of blocks around the central plaza gives way to more irregular neighbourhoods on the slopes, with streams and green gullies interrupting the pattern. Beyond the edges, pasture and ranch land stretch across the low hills of the region.
The wider area was once part of the Olmec heartland, and the town's name comes from Nahuatl. Today Acayucan serves as a commercial centre for the surrounding municipalities. An Acayucan map poster captures it as a meeting point, where the grid of the centre and the highways leading out are equally important to the picture.
Major routes across the isthmus meet at Acayucan, and their long, confident lines radiate outward from the town, giving the poster a strong sense of direction.
The historic centre follows a regular grid of blocks around the main square, the most orderly and densest part of the whole map.
Toward the outskirts, streets curve around low hills and small watercourses, loosening the grid into a softer, more irregular pattern.
