Te mapa
Adak lies in the Andreanof Islands of the Aleutian chain, far out along Alaska's arc toward Asia. It is mountainous, treeless and deeply indented, with long bays reaching into the land and volcanic peaks rising in the north. Almost the whole island is wild ground, and its roads and buildings are concentrated in one area near Kuluk Bay.
The island became a major military base during the Second World War and later served as a naval air station until it closed in 1997. The town of Adak remains on the site. It is the westernmost municipality in the United States and the southernmost town in Alaska. Runways, housing and a grid of former base roads still stand out against the tundra.
An Adak Island map poster pairs that compact cluster of streets and runways with the ragged coast and mountains around it. The contrast between straight engineered lines and the island's natural outline makes an unusual, slightly austere print, well suited to anyone with a connection to the base or the Aleutians.
Runways, roads and housing from the old air station form a tight geometric pattern near the northeast coast. It is the only large built-up area on the island.
This wide bay on the island's eastern side shelters the town and harbour area and gives the coastline a strong curve beside the built-up zone.
Steep volcanic mountains rise in the northern half of the island. Their slopes and ridges run down to deep bays and inlets along the coast.

Koteā ko Adak Island
Many people who hang a map of Adak served there or grew up there in Navy families, and the island's outline carries strong memories. Others are drawn by how remote it is: a small American town at the far end of the Aleutians.
