Te mapa
Umnak is one of the Fox Islands in the eastern Aleutians of Alaska, lying just southwest of Unalaska across a narrow pass. On a map it stretches from southwest to northeast, a long, irregular island with volcanic peaks along its length and a coastline broken by bays, spits and lagoons.
Its northeastern end is dominated by Okmok, a broad caldera several kilometres across that reads as a near-perfect ring on the map, with smaller cones inside. Okmok erupted strongly in 2008. Further southwest rises Mount Vsevidof, a steep stratovolcano, and the land around it falls toward the sea in long, radiating slopes.
The only permanent community is Nikolski, a small village on the southwestern coast with deep Unangan roots. During the Second World War an airfield was built on the island at Fort Glenn. An Umnak map poster brings together caldera, volcano and scattered settlement in a single long form set between the North Pacific and the Bering Sea.
The wide volcanic ring at the northeastern end is the island's defining feature, a circular shape with inner cones that anchors the whole composition.
A steep volcanic peak rises in the southwest, its slopes drawn as lines radiating toward the coast, one of several summits along the island's spine.
A narrow channel separates the island from Unalaska to the northeast, linking the Bering Sea and the Pacific and marking a natural break in the Aleutian chain.

Koteā ko Umnak
Umnak is a map for Aleutian families, for people who worked at sea in these waters and for anyone fascinated by volcanoes. Its long shape and the ring of Okmok make an unusual, strong image, well suited to landscape orientation.
