Adwick le Street lies a few miles north of Doncaster in South Yorkshire. Like many places in the area, it grew with coal. Rows of terraced and semi-detached houses spread out from an older village centre, and railway lines crossed the landscape to serve the mines and link the region to Leeds and beyond.
Its medieval parish church of St Laurence contains a memorial to members of the Washington family, ancestors of the first American president. That link to transatlantic history sits quietly among streets that mostly belong to the twentieth century.
