Te mapa
Afri-Ski lies high in the Maluti Mountains of northern Lesotho, at an altitude of around 3,000 metres, near the Mahlasela Pass. It is one of very few ski areas in southern Africa, a modest cluster of lodges, lift lines and slopes set into open, treeless highlands. From above, the resort is a small mark in a vast landscape of ridges and valleys, crossed by a mountain road.
Lesotho is sometimes called the Kingdom in the Sky because the whole country lies above 1,000 metres, and Afri-Ski shows why. On an Afri-Ski map poster, contour lines spread across nearly the entire sheet, with the ski area and its access road forming the only substantial human marks in a landscape of rounded summits and deep river cuts.
Natural snow here is often supplemented by snowmaking, and the season is short, but the resort draws visitors from South Africa and beyond who come for the novelty of skiing in Africa. In summer the same terrain is used for hiking and mountain biking. The map captures that sense of scale and isolation, a small outpost of winter sport in a wide highland plateau.
The main road crosses the highlands near the resort, winding over high ground. On the poster it is the principal line crossing the frame, linking the ski area to the rest of the country.
Rounded summits and deep valleys fill the landscape around the resort. Wide contour patterns cover most of the sheet, emphasising the height and openness of the terrain.
Lodges, lift lines and slopes gather in a compact area near the road. From above they form the only concentrated built shape in the mountains.
