Te mapa
Pietermaritzburg, the capital of KwaZulu-Natal, lies in the valley of the Msunduzi River, about eighty kilometres inland from Durban. From above, its historic centre is one of the clearest grids in South Africa, a set of long, straight streets laid out by Voortrekker settlers in the late 1830s and later filled with Victorian buildings. Around it, suburbs climb the surrounding hills in curving lines.
The red-brick City Hall, rebuilt in 1901 after a fire, stands at the centre of the grid. Pietermaritzburg also holds a significant place in world history: in 1893 Mohandas Gandhi was forced off a train at its station, an experience he later described as a turning point in his life. Every year the Comrades Marathon links the city with Durban.
A Pietermaritzburg map poster shows the ordered centre in striking contrast with its setting: the river winding along the valley, the green spaces of Alexandra Park and the Botanic Gardens, and the wooded escarpments that frame the city. The result is balanced and detailed, with a clear sense of history in its lines.
Long parallel streets and regular cross streets form the city's original plan, still perfectly legible on the map and centred on the civic buildings.
The river curves along the southern side of the centre, lined by parks and green corridors that soften the edges of the grid.
Suburbs spread up the slopes on every side in winding roads, while forest and plantations mark the escarpments that enclose the valley.

Koteā ko Pietermaritzburg
Pietermaritzburg is a city of schools, universities and long family histories, and many people have a strong attachment to it. A map of its grid and hills is a fitting gift for graduates, Comrades runners or anyone who has called it home.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, adding a year, a school or a race time, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The $9 digital files print cleanly at A2, 24×36″ and four other sizes.
