Águas Belas is a municipality in the interior of Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil, in the transitional zone between the agreste and the semi-arid sertão. The town itself is compact, with a grid of streets around its central church and square. Around it, the map opens into rolling countryside of caatinga scrub and farmland, crossed by long rural roads and seasonal watercourses.
The municipality is home to the Fulni-ô, an Indigenous people whose territory lies next to the town. The Fulni-ô are known for keeping their own language, Yathê, which is unusual in northeastern Brazil. On the map, the town and the Indigenous lands sit side by side, and the modest street pattern gives way quickly to open ground.
