Te mapa
Aracaju was designed as a new capital for the state of Sergipe in 1855. It is one of the earliest planned cities in Brazil. The original centre was laid out as a regular chessboard of streets beside the Sergipe River, and that grid is still clearly visible on the map, sharp and orderly next to the water.
From the historic centre the city spread south along the coast. The river's estuary curves around the northern and eastern edges, with mangroves and islands on the opposite bank. Newer districts fill the land between the river and the Atlantic, and the street pattern loosens as it moves away from the original plan.
In the south the city meets the ocean along the Orla de Atalaia, a long beachfront promenade. An Aracaju map poster shows a nineteenth-century plan and the Atlantic coast in the same frame, one of the smallest state capitals in Brazil in a clear and legible shape.
The original grid beside the Sergipe River is Aracaju's founding plan. It prints as a remarkably regular block of streets.
The river's wide mouth and mangrove banks wrap around the city. The water gives the northern and eastern edges a winding outline.
The long coastal promenade in the south of the city follows the Atlantic shore. It is a clean line marking the end of the urban grid.
