Te mapa
Alagoinhas lies in the interior of Bahia, a little over a hundred kilometres from Salvador, on low sandy land between the coast and the drier sertão. The ground is gentle, so the streets form a fairly regular pattern around the centre. Toward the outskirts they loosen into larger blocks and open lots. Small streams and ponds dot the landscape, which fits the town's name, meaning little lagoons.
Alagoinhas grew with the railway in the nineteenth century, when lines from Salvador reached here and continued inland. The tracks still draw long diagonals across the map, cutting through the grid at an angle. Highways branch out in several directions, which helped make the town a regional crossroads for trade, and the old station area still marks where that growth began.
The land here sits over a large groundwater reserve, and Alagoinhas is known in the state for the quality of its water, which has drawn beverage makers to the edges of town. An Alagoinhas map poster shows a town shaped by these practical things, railways, roads and water, rather than by any dramatic landscape. That makes the pattern of the streets themselves the main subject.
The railway lines that shaped the town cross the street grid at an angle. They leave long, straight cuts across the map and a clear trace of the station area.
On flat ground, the older centre follows a fairly regular pattern of blocks and squares. Toward the edges it gradually opens into wider lots and newer neighbourhoods.
Small waterways and ponds are scattered across the surrounding land. They echo the town's name and break up the street pattern with soft, irregular shapes.
