Te mapa
Salvador occupies a triangular peninsula that separates the Atlantic Ocean from the Baía de Todos os Santos, one of the largest bays on the Brazilian coast. Founded in 1549, it served as the first capital of colonial Brazil until 1763. From above, the coastline does most of the work: a long ocean shore on one side, calm bay water on the other, and the point of Barra where they meet.
The historic centre is built on two levels. The Cidade Alta sits on top of a steep escarpment facing the bay, while the Cidade Baixa runs along the waterfront below, and the Lacerda Elevator has linked them since 1873. The Pelourinho quarter, listed by UNESCO, forms a dense cluster of irregular streets and squares at the top of the slope.
Away from the old core, the city spreads across hills and valleys, with major avenues following the valley floors and neighbourhoods climbing the ridges between them. A Salvador map poster shows this uneven, organic pattern alongside the clean sweep of the two coastlines, a combination that gives the city a shape nothing like Brazil's planned capitals.
The Atlantic shore curves along the south and east while the bay shore runs along the west, meeting at the Barra point with its lighthouse fort at the tip.
Along the bay, a steep escarpment separates the old town above from the port district below, and the map shows the change as a sudden break in the street pattern.
Outside the centre, broad roads follow the bottoms of valleys between hills, so the main arteries curve and branch rather than forming a grid.

Koteā ko Salvador
Salvador is a city people remember by its streets and slopes, from the lanes of Pelourinho to the evening light over the bay. A black and white map reduces all of that to geography and lets the two waterfronts carry the image.
Personalise the poster with a title, a subtitle such as a date or a neighbourhood, and your own coordinates. It comes in five styles, including the warm Sand and the dark Noir, as a $9 HD download or as a printed poster with an optional wooden frame.
