Near-circular outline
Cliffs define almost the entire perimeter, so the coast reads as one clean, rounded line, a shape that looks bold and graphic in the Noir style.

Te mapa
Ailsa Craig stands alone in the outer Firth of Clyde, around ten miles off the Ayrshire coast near Girvan. From above it is a small, nearly round island, its shape defined by steep cliffs that rise on most sides to a central summit. The only flat ground lies on the eastern shore, where a lighthouse and a few old buildings sit beside a landing place.
The island is the eroded plug of an ancient volcano, and its distinctive microgranite has long been quarried for curling stones. Many of the stones used in the sport around the world have come from this rock, a fact that gives such a tiny outline a surprising reach. Remains of the quarry workings are still visible along the shore.
Today the island is a bird reserve with one of the largest gannet colonies in Britain. Sailors have long called it Paddy's Milestone, a marker on the sea route between Belfast and Glasgow. An Ailsa Craig map poster works best with plenty of sea around it, the island a single strong form set in the open water of the Clyde.
Cliffs define almost the entire perimeter, so the coast reads as one clean, rounded line, a shape that looks bold and graphic in the Noir style.
A narrow strip of level ground on the east side holds the lighthouse and the quarry remains, the only built detail on an otherwise wild island.
A wider frame brings in the Ayrshire coast and the approach to the firth, placing the island in its long-standing role as a landmark for passing ships.

Koteā ko Ailsa Craig
Curlers, golfers who have seen it from the Ayrshire links and anyone raised along the Clyde coast will recognise this silhouette. Its single bold shape makes a calm, graphic piece for a small wall, a study or a club room.
