Te mapa
Alcalá la Real, in the province of Jaén, is built around a steep hill crowned by the Fortaleza de la Mota. The walled fortress, with its keep and ruined church, controls the whole layout. On a map the oldest streets climb toward it in tight curves, and the later town spreads down the lower slopes and into the plain below.
For centuries this was frontier land between Castile and the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada. Alfonso XI took the town in 1341, and it remained a key stronghold facing Granada until 1492, earning the "Real" in its name. The fortress was built to watch the surrounding countryside, which it still overlooks.
An Alcalá la Real map poster captures that relationship between hill and town. It shows the fortified summit, the winding streets below it, the more regular modern blocks and the roads leading out into the olive groves that cover this part of Andalusia. The drawing combines centuries of history with a simple, clear geography.
The walled hilltop citadel sits above the town. Its enclosure and access paths form the most striking outline on the map.
The older streets curve around the base of the hill. They were shaped by gradient and defence rather than by any regular plan.
Beyond the edges of town, the map opens into rural roads crossing olive groves, the landscape that surrounds much of Jaén province.

The fortress on its hill is a strong image on its own, and the streets below show how the town grew around it. For people from Alcalá, or visitors who climbed to La Mota, the map is both personal and graphic.
