Te mapa
Alexandria reads on a map as a thin, stretched line. The city runs for kilometres along the Mediterranean shore, held in place by the sea to the north and the shallow waters of Lake Mariout to the south. Between them the streets settle into long parallel bands, with the tram line and the coastal road tracing the same gentle curve as the beach.
At the western end, two harbours sit on either side of a neck of land that grew over the causeway once linking the mainland to Pharos island. The Eastern Harbour forms an almost perfect crescent, framed by the Corniche and closed at its tip by the Citadel of Qaitbay, built on the site of the ancient lighthouse.
Founded by Alexander the Great in the fourth century BC, the city was a centre of learning for the ancient world, and the modern Bibliotheca Alexandrina now faces the same bay. An Alexandria map poster shows how that long history is compressed into a narrow coastal strip, where almost every street eventually meets the water.

The broad, shallow lake south of the city sets a hard inland edge, which is why Alexandria grew sideways along the coast rather than outward.
The land between the two harbours covers the ancient Heptastadion, the causeway to Pharos island. Its dense, irregular streets contrast with the straighter blocks further east.

Koteā ko Alexandria
For many people Alexandria is a place of family summers, of study, or of a long stretch of seafront walked at dusk. A print that traces the Corniche and the harbours keeps that coastline in view, reduced to its essential lines and easy to live with on a wall.
You can set your own title and subtitle, add a date or a line of coordinates, and choose from five styles, from Classic black & white to the warmer Sand. The digital file costs $9, or you can order a printed poster with an optional wooden frame.
