Damanhur is the capital of Beheira governorate, on the western side of the Nile Delta. The name goes back to ancient Egyptian and is usually explained as the town of Horus. In Greek and Roman times the town was known as Hermopolis Parva. Today it is a dense market and administrative city surrounded by some of Egypt's most intensively farmed land.
On a Damanhur map poster, the centre is a tightly packed grid of streets with markets and squares. The railway between Alexandria and Cairo passes through the town, and main roads cross it. At the edges, the built-up area quickly gives way to a fine pattern of canals, drains and field boundaries typical of the delta.
The Mahmoudiya Canal, dug in the nineteenth century to carry Nile water to Alexandria, runs close by. Together with the smaller irrigation channels, it gives the map long flowing lines that follow the gentle slope of the land towards the Mediterranean coast.
Streets, markets and squares pack into a compact core. The fine urban grain contrasts clearly with the open fields right at the city's edge.
Irrigation and drainage channels cross the surrounding plain. Among them, the Mahmoudiya Canal stands out as a long line towards Alexandria.
The line between Alexandria and Cairo runs through the town. Its straight course and station area form a clear axis through the city.
