Algemesí sits in the Ribera Alta, south of Valencia, on the wide alluvial plain of the Júcar river. The land here is almost perfectly flat, and the town looks like a dense, rounded mass of streets set among farmland that stretches out on all sides.
The town's best-known tradition is the Festa de la Mare de Déu de la Salut, held each September. Its processions, dances and muixeranga human towers were added to UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2011. The streets of the historic centre act as the festival's stage.
