Allentown lies in the Lehigh Valley of eastern Pennsylvania, on the west bank of the Lehigh River. From above, the city is laid out on a regular grid, with downtown streets running in straight lines around the central square. Creek valleys, including the Little Lehigh and Jordan Creek, cut through the grid, and long parks follow their banks, adding green curves to the otherwise rigid pattern.
In 1777, during the American Revolution, the Liberty Bell was hidden in the basement of a church in Allentown to keep it from British forces. The city grew as an industrial centre, and it later became known nationally through Billy Joel's 1982 song about its changing economy. Today it is the largest city in the Lehigh Valley.
