Te mapa
Altai is the administrative centre of Govi-Altai Province in western Mongolia. It stands at high altitude, among steppe and mountain ranges, in a region where settlements are few and distances between them are great. From above, the town appears as a defined block of streets on an otherwise open landscape.
Much of the town's layout dates from the twentieth century, when provincial centres across Mongolia were laid out on planned lines. Straight streets and rectangular blocks hold public buildings and apartment houses, while districts of fenced plots with gers and small houses spread around the edges, giving the town a looser outer texture.
An Altai map poster shows this clear contrast between the ordered centre and the surrounding space. Roads leave the town and fade into the steppe, and the mountains beyond are part of the setting even where the map shows only emptiness. It is a spare and unusual image.
The central streets form a regular pattern of straight roads and rectangular blocks, containing the provincial administration, public buildings and apartment houses.
Around the core, fenced plots with gers and small houses form a looser pattern, the fine outer texture that surrounds many Mongolian provincial towns.
Beyond the town, the landscape is almost empty on the map, with a few roads heading off across the high steppe towards distant settlements and mountains.
