Te mapa
Karamay sits on the north-western edge of the Dzungarian Basin in Xinjiang, where the desert rises towards low mountains. From above, the city is a set of broad rectangular blocks, wide boulevards and generous setbacks. This orderly layout comes from a town that grew quickly around a single industry. Past the last streets the map fills with the straight lines of pipelines, service roads and well fields that run out into the steppe.
The name comes from the Uyghur for black oil. It refers to natural seeps at Heiyoushan, the Black Oil Mountain, where crude still rises to the surface. The oil field found here in the 1950s was one of the first major ones in the People's Republic, and the city was built to serve it. Long water channels and green belts now run through the urban grid, which is unusual in such a dry setting.
A Karamay map poster shows a city designed on paper and then drawn onto the desert. The regular blocks, the green corridors and the thin lines heading into empty ground make a striking black and white composition that looks almost like a technical drawing.
Wide, straight avenues divide central Karamay into large, even blocks. It is one of the clearest planned street patterns in western China when seen at poster scale.
A long landscaped channel with parks along it runs through the city and sets a soft curved line against the otherwise rigid grid of streets.
The built-up area stops abruptly at open basin land. Beyond it, only roads and industrial tracks continue, so the frame has a strong sense of the city as an island.

Koteā ko Karamay
For people who have worked in the oil industry or grown up in Karamay, the city's plan is a record of their own years there. The clean geometry also suits people who simply like maps that look like drawings.
