Huocheng lies in the Ili valley in northwestern Xinjiang, part of the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture. The valley is wide and fertile, framed by the Tian Shan ranges. From above, the town appears as a compact grid of streets surrounded by a patchwork of irrigated fields, tree-lined roads and drainage channels.
The county reaches west to the Khorgos crossing on the Kazakhstan border, one of the main overland gateways between China and Central Asia. The area is also known for its lavender fields, which colour the valley in early summer.
