Te mapa
Amaraji is a municipality in Pernambuco, in the Zona da Mata, the humid belt of hills that runs inland from Brazil's north-eastern coast. From above, the town lies across uneven ground, its streets curving along valleys and up slopes, never settling into a full grid.
The Zona da Mata has been sugarcane country for centuries, and the land around Amaraji reflects that: rolling hills, fields and patches of remaining forest, with small roads winding between them. The town grew as a local centre in this landscape, and its layout follows the terrain more than any plan.
An Amaraji map poster picks up that movement. Streets wind and branch, main roads follow the easiest routes between hills, and the edges of town break up where the ground gets steeper. In monochrome, the result is soft and organic, a clear contrast with the rigid grids of more planned towns.
Amaraji's streets bend with the hills and valleys instead of running straight, which gives the map a flowing, irregular pattern throughout the town.
The main roads in and out follow the lower ground between the hills, linking the town to its neighbours in the Pernambuco interior.
Around the town, rolling hills with fields and woodland take over. The built-up area stops unevenly where slopes become too steep for streets.
