Te mapa
Igarassu lies on the coast of Pernambuco, north of Recife, and ranks among the earliest Portuguese settlements in Brazil, founded in the 1530s. Its historic centre sits on raised ground above the Igarassu River. On a map it appears as a small, irregular cluster of streets, clearly different from the straighter roads of the newer districts around it.
The Church of Saints Cosmas and Damian, traditionally dated to 1535, is often described as the oldest surviving church in Brazil, and it anchors the old quarter. From there the town extends along highways toward Recife and the north. Newer neighbourhoods are laid out in more regular blocks across the flatter land.
East of the town, the river spreads into mangroves and estuary channels before reaching the sea near the island of Itamaracá, a landscape of soft, branching shapes that looks striking in black and white. An Igarassu map poster brings the colonial hill, the modern town and the watery coastal edge together in a single frame.
The historic centre, with its churches and convent, sits on raised ground, and its short, crooked streets stand out against the regular blocks that surround it.
The river curves along the town's eastern side before widening into mangrove-lined channels, drawing organic shapes that contrast with the straight roads inland.
Toward the sea the land breaks into tidal channels and mangrove islands near Itamaracá, giving the map a delicate edge of water and marsh.

Koteā ko Igarassu
Igarassu appeals to anyone drawn to Brazil's colonial past, and to families with roots in this corner of Pernambuco. The map keeps both the sixteenth-century centre and the estuary in view, a quiet record of one of the places where the country's story began.
