Te mapa
Amba Giorgis sits in the highlands of Amhara Region, north of Gondar on the main road that continues toward Debark and the Simien Mountains. From above, the town is organised along that road, with streets branching off the main line and houses spreading across the slopes and level ground nearby.
This is upland country, with ridges, valleys and farmland reaching across rolling terrain. The name combines amba, a word used in Ethiopia for flat-topped hills and mountains, and Giorgis, Saint George, a common dedication for churches in the region. On a map the town appears as a small, dense cluster in a large and varied landscape.
An Amba Giorgis map poster emphasises the relationship between the road and the land. The highway draws a firm line through the page, while tracks and footpaths wander off toward villages in the hills, and streams mark the valley floors between them.
The road from Gondar toward Debark passes directly through town and provides the main axis of the map, with the settlement lining either side.
Ridges and valleys surround the town, and rural roads bend to follow the land, creating curving lines that contrast with the straight highway.
Small rural clusters appear across the hills around the town, connected by tracks, giving the edges of the poster a sparse, dotted texture.
