Anamur sits on a small coastal plain in the west of Mersin province, where the Taurus Mountains briefly step back from the Mediterranean. From above, the town centre lies a little inland. Roads run down to the seafront at İskele, and greenhouses and banana plantations cover much of the flat land in between.
Cape Anamur, just west of the town, is the southernmost point of Anatolia. Nearby are the ruins of ancient Anemurium, with its necropolis spread over the hillside, and the well-preserved Mamure Castle, whose walls and towers stand right on the shore east of town. Anamur is also known for its bananas and for beaches where sea turtles nest.
