Te mapa
Arecibo stretches along the north coast of Puerto Rico, west of San Juan. The historic centre sits close to the shore near the mouth of the Río Grande de Arecibo, with a compact grid of streets around the plaza and newer neighbourhoods spreading along the coastal highway. Inland, the flat coastal plain gives way to the karst region, a landscape of rounded limestone hills and sinkholes.
Founded in the early seventeenth century, Arecibo is one of the oldest towns on the island. It became known worldwide for the Arecibo Observatory, whose enormous radio telescope sat in a natural sinkhole in the hills south of the city. For decades it served astronomy and planetary research, until it collapsed in 2020.
An Arecibo map poster brings these layers together: the Atlantic shoreline running across the top, the river cutting down from the interior, the regular plan of the old town and the fragmented pattern of roads threading between the hills. It is a map with a clear sense of direction, from the sea to the mountains.

South of the coast, roads twist between limestone hills and sinkholes, the same landscape that once cradled the famous Arecibo radio telescope.

Koteā ko Arecibo
For Puerto Ricans on the island and in the diaspora, a map of Arecibo is a direct link to family, beaches and the hills inland. Science lovers may also want a reminder of the observatory that made the city's name known worldwide.
