Oasis boundary
The irrigated land ends sharply where the desert begins, so the map shows a crisp edge between dense lanes and fields and wide, empty terrain.

Te mapa
Artux is the seat of the Kizilsu Kyrgyz Autonomous Prefecture in western Xinjiang, just north of Kashgar at the edge of the Tarim Basin. Behind it rise the bare foothills of the Tian Shan. On the map the green oasis appears as an island of streets, orchards and irrigation channels surrounded by arid land.
The area has a long place in Central Asian history. Near the city stands the mausoleum of Satuq Bughra Khan, the Kara-Khanid ruler remembered as the first Turkic khan to convert to Islam, in the tenth century. Artux is also known for its figs, which are grown in the surrounding villages and sold across the region.
The modern town follows a straightforward plan of broad avenues and rectangular blocks, while the older villages around it keep a looser pattern of lanes that follow the water channels. An Artux map poster shows this meeting of new grid, oasis farmland and empty desert, with the mountains beginning just beyond the edge.
The irrigated land ends sharply where the desert begins, so the map shows a crisp edge between dense lanes and fields and wide, empty terrain.
The mausoleum of the Kara-Khanid ruler lies in the countryside near the city. It is an important historical and religious site for the whole region.
A short road corridor runs south across the fields to Kashgar, linking the two cities and giving the composition a clear direction.
