Te mapa
Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan, lies on a narrow strip of oasis land between the Kopetdag mountains to the south and the Karakum Desert to the north. Very little of the older town survived the 1948 earthquake, and the city that replaced it was planned on a generous scale. From above, wide avenues run in long straight lines, and the blocks are spaced far apart.
Since the 1990s whole districts have been rebuilt in white marble, and the city holds a Guinness record for the highest density of white marble-clad buildings. On a map this shows up as monumental complexes, large squares and landscaped parks between the avenues. To the south the streets climb towards the foothills, while to the north the Karakum Canal passes along the outskirts.
An Ashgabat map poster turns a city usually photographed for its gleaming façades into pure line and space. Without the marble and fountains, the plan itself becomes the subject: the axial boulevards, the open plazas and the long southern avenues pointing towards the mountains. It is an unusual map, orderly and spacious, and it holds up well in every one of the five styles.
The Kopetdag range rises just south of the city. Streets thin out as they approach the slopes, which gives the map a clear edge in contrast with the dense central grid.
Long, wide boulevards cross the city in straight lines, linking squares and government complexes. At poster scale they read as bold strokes that organise the whole plan.
One of the longest irrigation canals in the world passes along the northern outskirts, a thin line of water between the city and the desert beyond.
