Sabzevar Map Poster & Print
Sabzevar lies in western Razavi Khorasan, on a wide plain between the mountains to the north and the edge of the central desert to the south. On a map, the city is compact and fairly regular. The older centre is surrounded by newer districts laid out in wider blocks. Main roads run east–west, following the route between Tehran and Mashhad.
That route is the old Silk Road, and Sabzevar has been a stopping point for travellers for centuries. In the fourteenth century it was the base of the Sarbedaran, a local dynasty that ruled part of Khorasan. West of the city stands the brick minaret of Khosrogerd, which dates to the Seljuk period.

Rendered in black and white, the town looks like a single, contained settlement on the empty plain, much as caravans once saw it on the horizon.
