Semnan lies on the southern slopes of the Alborz range, facing the Dasht-e Kavir, Iran's great salt desert. From above, the city sits on a narrow strip of habitable land between mountains and desert. The dense old quarter is surrounded by newer districts laid out on wider, more regular streets.
For centuries Semnan was a stop on the road linking Tehran with Khorasan, part of the network of routes known as the Silk Road. The city also has its own language, Semnani, which is still spoken by some residents and is often cited as a sign of how long the community has lived here.
