Te mapa
Qā’em Shahr stands on the Caspian lowland of Māzandarān, a short distance inland from the coast. The Talar River runs north through the city toward the sea, and on the map its course divides the built area into two uneven halves joined by bridges. Roads leave in several directions for the other towns of the plain, including Sari and Babol, giving the city a slightly star-shaped outline.
South of the city the ground begins to climb into the wooded foothills of the Alborz, while the flat land to the north is a patchwork of paddies and citrus groves. The Trans-Iranian Railway passes through on its way from the Caspian toward Tehran, and its tracks form a long, steady line through the urban fabric. Until 1979 the town was known as Shahi.
A Qā’em Shahr map poster shows a city defined by its river, its rail line and the roads that fan out across the plain. Printed in black on white, those few strong lines give a clear picture of how the place grew around movement between the mountains and the sea, and how closely it is tied to the farmland around it.
The Talar flows north through the middle of the city on its way to the Caspian, splitting the street network and giving the map its central spine.
The Trans-Iranian Railway crosses the city in a long, gentle curve, a clean line on the map that recalls the town's role as a stop between the coast and Tehran.
To the south the plain gives way to forested foothills, so the flat, dense city on the map sits right where the lowland begins to rise toward the mountains.
