Assemini lies in southern Sardinia, a few kilometres northwest of Cagliari. It sits on the flat Campidano plain close to the Stagno di Santa Gilla, a large coastal lagoon. On the map the town is a compact, fairly dense area of streets, set between the lagoon, farmland and the big roads and industrial zones that serve the Cagliari area.
The historic centre has narrow, irregular streets, while newer districts spread out along more regular lines. Assemini has a long pottery tradition, and ceramics are part of its local identity. Cagliari's Elmas airport lies close by on the same lagoon shore.
