Te mapa
Atlixco lies in the state of Puebla, southeast of the Popocatépetl volcano, in a fertile valley with a mild climate. From above, the town has the clear structure of a Spanish colonial settlement: a regular grid of blocks centred on the main plaza, with churches and former convents at key points, and the steep Cerro de San Miguel rising directly beside the centre.
The hill is crowned by the chapel of San Miguel, reached by a long stairway, and from the top the grid of rooftops spreads out below with the volcano on the horizon. Around the town, fields and greenhouses form a patchwork of rectangular plots, part of the flower and plant nursery trade that has earned Atlixco its reputation as a town of flowers.
Atlixco is also known for the Huey Atlixcáyotl festival, which brings music and dance from communities across the region to the hill each September. An Atlixco map poster captures the neat colonial grid, the rounded outline of the Cerro de San Miguel and the roads leading out through the valley toward Puebla and the volcano.
The steep hill beside the centre is crowned by a chapel, and its rounded contour breaks the regular grid in the most recognisable way.
Straight streets in a regular pattern extend from the main plaza, a classic Spanish town plan that reads cleanly in black and white.
Rectangular plots of fields and greenhouses surround the town, adding a patchwork of fine lines between the urban edge and the countryside.
