Te mapa
Xochimilco, in the south of Mexico City, preserves one of the most unusual landscapes in any capital. Its northern part is a network of canals and chinampas, the small rectangular farming islands built by pre-Hispanic peoples on the shallow lakebed. From above, the canals form a fine lattice of waterways separating long, narrow plots of land.
Together with the historic centre of Mexico City, Xochimilco was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987. Visitors travel the canals on colourful trajineras, and the waters are home to the axolotl, the salamander that has become a symbol of the city and of efforts to protect its remaining wetlands.
A Xochimilco map poster reveals structure that is hard to see from a boat. The regular grid of canals and chinampas fills the lower ground, the town centre gathers around its old church and market, and to the south the streets rise into hills and volcanic slopes, following the contours in winding lines.
Dozens of canals form a lattice across the lowland, giving the map an intricate pattern of water that looks almost like a woven textile.
Long, narrow islands of farmland lie between the canals, a pre-Hispanic farming system still visible in the geometry of the landscape.
Beyond the wetlands, streets climb into hills and volcanic terrain, turning the regular canal grid into curving roads that follow the ground.
