Te mapa
La Magdalena Contreras is one of the sixteen boroughs of Mexico City, on its southwestern edge. The map reads in two halves. To the northeast, dense neighbourhoods of winding streets follow the slope. To the southwest, a large forest covers the Sierra de las Cruces, and there the street network stops and footpaths take over.
The Magdalena River runs down from these mountains through the borough, one of the few rivers in the capital still flowing in the open. Its upper valley holds the Los Dinamos area, named after small hydroelectric plants built in the early twentieth century to power local textile mills. Those mills shaped the older settlements along the river.
A Magdalena Contreras map poster shows how the city meets the mountains: streets that bend around ravines, lanes that follow ridges, and older village centres such as San Jerónimo set within the wider urban area. Drawn in fine lines, the change from tight streets to open forest gives the print an unusual sense of height.
The river comes down a forested valley from the southwest. Its course is the clearest natural line on the map before it reaches the neighbourhoods below.
A protected wooded area in the upper valley, named after early hydroelectric plants, forms a large open space. Here the city's streets simply end and the mountain begins.
In the built-up part, streets curve and switch back along slopes and ravines. The result is an organic pattern very different from the flat grids of central Mexico City.

Koteā ko Magdalena Contreras
This is a map for people who know the borough from the inside: weekend walks up to Los Dinamos, a family house on a steep street, a school in San Jerónimo. It shows a side of Mexico City that most maps of the capital leave out.
You can set your own title and subtitle, perhaps a colonia name or an anniversary, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Printed posters come on matte paper, with an optional wooden frame.
