Te mapa
Iztapalapa is the most populous borough of Mexico City, covering much of the southeast of the capital. Large parts of it were built on the dried bed of Lake Texcoco, and the ground is flat across its western and central areas, where the street grid runs in long, dense blocks crossed by wide avenues and the lines of the metro.
The flatness is broken by volcanic relief. The Cerro de la Estrella rises within the borough, the hill where the Aztecs held the New Fire ceremony, and to the east the Sierra de Santa Catarina forms a chain of cones and craters. On the map the streets thin and curve as they reach these slopes, and the summits appear as open patches.
Iztapalapa is known across Mexico for its Holy Week Passion Play, staged in its streets since the nineteenth century and drawing very large crowds. An Iztapalapa map poster shows the contrast that defines the borough: tight neighbourhoods packed across the old lakebed and quieter volcanic hills rising out of them.
This isolated hill rises from the dense grid as an open, rounded form, with streets wrapping around its base and parkland covering its upper slopes.
A row of volcanic peaks along the eastern side breaks the city into curving roads and open ground, marking where the flat lakebed ends.
Across the former Lake Texcoco, long straight streets form a close, regular mesh that fills most of the borough and gives the map its fine texture.
