Te mapa
Augusta is the capital of Maine, on the Kennebec River in the centre of the state. On a map the river divides the city into two halves, linked by several bridges. The compact downtown runs along the west bank, and residential streets climb the slopes on both sides of the valley.
The Maine State House, designed by Charles Bulfinch and completed in the 1830s, stands on the west side, with Capitol Park stretching toward the river. On the east bank is Old Fort Western, built in 1754 and one of the oldest wooden forts still standing in the country. The waterfront, the historic buildings and the bridges form the heart of the map.
An Augusta map poster shows a small capital shaped by its river. The Kennebec runs through the frame, and the streets on both sides follow the slopes of the valley rather than a single grid. Further out, the roads and the interstate lead into wooded Maine countryside. Blueprint suits the river city well.
The river runs north to south through the city, with bridges connecting the two banks, and is the central feature of the map.
Bulfinch's State House and the open space of Capitol Park sit on the west bank, sloping gently down toward the Kennebec.
On the east bank, the 1754 wooden fort marks Augusta's origin as a trading post on the river, next to today's downtown.

Augusta means something to people who work in state government, who grew up in central Maine or who have spent time on the Kennebec. The river through the middle gives the poster a clear and pleasing structure.
