Te mapa
Cambridge faces Boston across the Charles River, and its map is organised around one spine: Massachusetts Avenue, which runs from the river through Central Square and Harvard Square toward Porter Square. Unlike Boston's Back Bay, the streets rarely form a clean grid. They bend around old property lines, rail corridors and the curves of the river, meeting in a series of irregular squares.
Founded in 1630 as Newtowne, the city is home to two of the world's best-known universities. Harvard's yards and quadrangles sit toward the western end of the avenue, while MIT's long buildings and courts line the riverfront near Kendall Square. The Harvard Bridge, which carries the avenue into Boston, is famously measured in smoots, a unit MIT students invented in 1958.
A Cambridge map poster shows what makes the city distinctive: the green courtyards of the campuses, the tight residential blocks of Cambridgeport and East Cambridge, and the white sweep of the Charles. Fresh Pond, the city's reservoir, sits to the west as a large open shape that balances the dense streets around the squares.

MIT's campus stretches along Memorial Drive. Killian Court opens toward the Charles, and large blocks of laboratories extend back toward Kendall Square.
A sequence of bridges ties Cambridge to Boston across the broad curve of the river: the Longfellow near Kendall, the Harvard Bridge, and smaller crossings upstream.
